About us:

The project OMLO-IOD - Optical Computers in Space - Phase 0-C focuses on the development and preparation of a small-satellite mission to demonstrate photonic computing hardware in orbit. Within the project, an optical computing payload and the associated satellite system, based on the modular TUBiX20 platform, will be developed up to the Critical Design Review stage. A subsequent project phase is intended to enable the construction, launch and operation of the satellite.
The position focuses on mission analysis and on the mission-specific design and analysis of key satellite subsystems. From a technical perspective, this includes the design and further development of the attitude determination and control system (ADCS) and the satellite communications system.

Your responsibilities:

  • Mission analysis and mission planning
    **-**Perform orbit and coverage analyses and analyse communication windows, data rates and availability
    - Prepare power and energy budgets and derive robust constraints for system and subsystem design
    - Develop and assess mission requirements and representative operational scenarios
    - Derive technical work packages from the mission analysis results
  • Development of the attitude and orbit control system
    - Mission-specific design and adaptation of the attitude determination and control system (ADCS) of the TUBiX20 platform
    - Derive technical requirements and select and assess suitable components for attitude determination and control
    - Simulate and assess dynamic system behaviour in operational and fault scenarios
    - Develop and adapt models and control algorithms
  • Design of the satellite communications system
    - Design and adapt the communications system based on existing TUBiX20 developments and experience, and select suitable components
    - Prepare and assess link budgets for the relevant mission phases and operational scenarios
    - Contribute to planning ground station operations

Your profile:

  • Successfully completed scientific university degree (Diplom, Master or equivaltent) inin aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, control engineering, mechatronics, physics or a comparable field - Very good knowledge and experience in mission analysis and mission design
  • Good knowledge of and experience with at least one programming or simulation environment (Python, MATLAB/Simulink or C/C++), as well as experience in modelling and simulating dynamic systems
  • Ability to independently analyse complex technical issues and to document requirements, decisions, work progress and test results in a clear and traceable manner
  • Strong communication, coordination and organisational skills, together with a confident manner when working with project partners desirable
  • Independent, structured, responsible and solution-oriented approach to work desirable
  • Good command of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire lacking language skills
  • Knowledge of ECSS standards or comparable development, verification, quality assurance and documentation processes desirable
  • Experience in the development of small satellites, microsatellites or spacecraft payloads is a plus
  • Experience in embedded software development in C/C++ desirable
  • Experience in the development of attitude determination and control systems (sensors, algorithms and actuators) desirable
  • Experience in the design of communications systems and the implementation of communications protocols, for example in the UHF, S or X bands desirable
  • Knowledge of common communication interfaces for embedded systems (CAN, UART, I²C, SPI, Ethernet) is a plus
  • Experience in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) desirable
  • Experience with version control systems desirable
