The Chair of Technical Thermodynamics at RWTH Aachen University covers all relevant scales for the description of a process starting from the molecules up to the full process scale. The chair presently hosts 4 professors and more than 40 PhD students. It is tightly engaged in cooperation projects on biofuel production and utilisation as well as on CO2 utilisation with industrial and academic partners. The open PhD position is located in the Molecular Systems Engineering group led by Prof. Leonhard.
Research Assistant (w/m/d)
There is a big need for sustainable production processes for fuels and other base chemicals from biomass and waste streams. Such processes should be at least economically competitive and ecologically superior to existing ones. We are implementing tools to design such processes by optimizing properties of the molecules and the devices using quantum chemical, kinetic and thermodynamic models in combination with device and process models in cooperation with the chemical engineers. You will contribute substantially to the development of the methods and their integration into the design tools and employ them to design bio refineries. Experimentally validation of the results is planned with cooperation partners.
MSc Degree (or comparable) in Chemistry, Physics, (Chemical) Engineering or Engineering Physics.
First experiences in computational chemistry or thermodynamic modelling, e.g. in applies quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics or equation of state modelling (e.g. PC-SAFT).
Experience in the development and implementation of algorithms (python, etc.).
Good written and verbal communication skills in German and English.
You are at least as enthusiastic about developing new molecular models as about saving the world from climate change.
Desirable additional knowledge and experience:
Team player, with good two-way communication skills, highly self-motivated and able to work independently with excellent time management skills.
What we offer:
The position is for 15 months and is to be filled as soon as possible. An extension to a total of at least 3 years is planned. This is a full-time position. It is also available as part-time employment per request.
The successful candidate has the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree.
The salary corresponds to level EG 13 TV-L.
