The Max Planck Insti­tute of Micro­struc­ture Phys­ics, Halle, Ger­many, Depart­ment of Nan­o­photon­ics, Integ­ra­tion, and Neural Tech­no­logy is ini­ti­at­ing research pro­grams in devices and microsys­tems for future com­put­ing and brain activ­ity map­ping tech­no­lo­gies. We are launch­ing pro­grams in integ­rated photon­ics, AI accel­er­at­ors, implant­able brain probes, mini­ature micro­scopes, and 3D cell cul­tures. Our research crosses many bound­ar­ies, so our team mem­bers must have an open mind and a strong tech­nical found­a­tion that allow them to answer to new chal­lenges.

We are recruit­ing for mul­tiple pos­i­tions with vari­ous skill and edu­ca­tion require­ments. Our depart­ment has a mix of Ph.D. stu­dents, postdocs, sci­ent­ists, and staff from around the world. The work­ing lan­guage in the Insti­tute is Eng­lish. We are a hard­work­ing and sup­port­ive team.

Postdoc­toral Fel­lows

Work­ing field:

We are recruit­ing Postdoc­toral Fel­lows. The new NINT Depart­ment is ini­ti­at­ing research pro­grams on devices and microsys­tems for the future of com­put­ing. We are launch­ing research pro­jects in the fol­low­ing areas:
  • Nan­o­tech­no­logy-enabled brain implants, espe­cially those that com­bine mul­tiple sens­ing/stim­u­la­tion mod­al­it­ies in a single pack­age, to advance neur­os­cience and brain-com­puter inter­faces
  • Photonic integ­rated cir­cuits in the vis­ible spec­trum for applic­a­tions bey­ond tele­com­mu­nic­a­tions, such as ima­ging, dis­plays, sens­ing, and com­put­ing
  • Integ­ra­tion of phase-change mater­i­als onto sil­icon photonic cir­cuits for sens­it­ive pho­to­de­tec­tion and highly tun­able optical thin-film sur­faces


Your tasks
  • Col­lab­or­ate with the team to com­plete pro­jects in integ­rated photon­ics and neur­o­tech­no­lo­gies
  • Your research may include:
  • Design, nan­ofab­ric­a­tion, and meas­ure­ment photonic and other micro­tech­no­logy devices (e.g., micro­fluidics, micro­elec­tron­ics)
  • Cul­tur­ing and 3D print­ing neural tis­sues and organoids
  • Design, fab­ric­a­tion, and char­ac­ter­iz­a­tion (in vitro and in vivo) of brain implants
  • Assist in estab­lish­ing the photon­ics, pro­to­typ­ing, and neur­o­tech­no­logy labs in the Depart­ment
  • Train and work closely with other postdoc­toral fel­lows, Ph.D. and/or Mas­ter’s stu­dents
  • Present research res­ults in inter­na­tional sci­entific journ­als and con­fer­ences
  • Inter­act with private sec­tor part­ners if neces­sary

Your pro­file
  • You have earned or will soon earn a Ph.D. Degree in engin­eer­ing (elec­trical, com­puter, bioen­gin­eer­ing), applied phys­ics, or a related dis­cip­line
  • You are motiv­ated by grand chal­lenges
  • You have a demon­strated track-record of sci­entific pro­ductiv­ity
  • You excel at inde­pend­ently defin­ing prob­lems and solv­ing them with cre­ativ­ity and resource­ful­ness
