RWTH Aachen - Institute for Combustion Engines (VKA)

At the Institute for Combustion Engines (VKA) and the Center for Mobile Propulsion (CMP) under the direction of Prof. Dr.-Ing. (USA) Stefan Pischinger, research on all topics concerning the vehicle powertrain is conducted. Core focus is still the research on conventional combustion engine development like the implementation of innovative engine designs, fundamental research on more efficient combustion processes also in combination with alternative fuels or the improvement of the engine mechanics and aftertreatment systems. Additional research areas include virtual engine development, hybrid powertrains, electromobility as well as fuel cells and mechatronics for combustion engines. At any time research is closely associated with the ongoing development of intelligent methods for test procedures and engine calibration. The Institute for Combustion Engines employs more than 260 scientific, technical and administrative employees as well as student assistants.

The interdisciplinary post graduate program Integrated Energy Supply Modules for Roadbound E-Mobility (mobilEM) is funded by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The overall objective is the investigation of the physical foundations of electro-chemical energy storage and its combination with novel fuel-operated range extender units.

Optim­iz­a­tion of the Air Path of Fuel Cell Sys­tems

Work­ing field:

  • Deve­lop­ment and ana­ly­sis of inno­va­tive com­pres­sor and sealing con­cepts to pro­vide oil-free sup­ply air
  • Inves­ti­ga­tion of the fuel cell sys­tem beha­vior under various ope­ra­ting modes and envi­ron­men­tal con­di­ti­ons
  • Opti­mi­za­tion of the fuel cell sys­tem design and ope­ra­tio­nal stra­tegy for maxi­mum effi­ci­ency and dura­bi­lity


  • Hol­der of a uni­ver­sity degree (mas­ter or com­pa­ra­ble) in mecha­ni­cal or elec­tri­cal engi­nee­ring with above average scores.
  • Inte­rest in inno­va­tive and inter­di­sci­pli­nary topics.
  • High level of respon­si­bi­lity, initia­tive and team spi­rit.

What we of­fer:

The posi­tion is limi­ted to 1 year and is to be fil­led by Octo­ber 1, 2019. An exten­sion up to 4 years is pro­vi­ded. The stan­dard wee­kly hours will be 39,83 hours.

The suc­cess­ful can­di­date has the oppor­tu­nity to pur­sue a doc­to­ral degree.

The salary cor­re­sponds to level EG 13 TV-L.
