The Zuse Insti­tute Ber­lin (ZIB) is a non-uni­versity research insti­tute under pub­lic law of the state of Ber­lin. Together with its part­ners from aca­demia and industry, ZIB con­trib­utes to the solu­tion of highly com­plex prob­lems in sci­ence, tech­no­logy, envir­on­ment and soci­ety by devel­op­ing math­em­at­ical mod­els and effi­cient algorithms.

The posi­tion is offe­red at the ear­liest pos­si­ble date and will be a fixed-term con­tract for 2 years, with the option to be exten­ded.

Work­ing field:

The research pos­i­tion is loc­ated in the field of visu­al­iz­a­tion, ana­lysis, regis­tra­tion and fusion of two-dimen­sional (2D) and 3-dimen­sional (3D) image data acquired dur­ing the pro­cess of addit­ive man­u­fac-tur­ing. The research will be done in col­lab­or­a­tions with two research groups from the Bundes­an­stalt für Mater­i­alforschung und -prü­fung (BAM), who develop and optim­ize addit­ive man­u­fac­tur­ing meth­ods. To allow a detailed invest­ig­a­tion of the pro­cess of addit­ive man­u­fac­tur­ing, sev­eral image acquis­i­tion tech­niques are applied to the same object in order to gen­er­ate images with dif­fer­ent res­ol­u­tions and mod­al­it­ies. The main goal of the pro­ject is the devel­op­ment of tech­niques and tools that enable a com­bined visu­al­iz­a­tion and ana­lysis of all acquired data. In par­tic­u­lar, it shall be invest­ig­ated which meth­ods are spe­cific­ally suited to auto­mat­ic­ally mon­itor the pro­cess of addit­ive man­u­fac­tur­ing to ensure high qual­ity products. Soft­ware devel­op­ment of pro­to­types will be car­ried out in the visu­al­iz­a­tion and ana­lysis soft-ware Amira.


  • mas­ter’s degree in com­pu­ter sci­ence, mathe­ma­tics or phy­sics
  • a very strong back­ground in com­pu­ter visua­liza­t­ion and com­pu­ter gra­phics, par­ti­cu­larly in the
field of volume ren­de­ring
  • know­ledge in image seg­men­ta­tion and fea­ture extrac­tion
  • good back­ground of linear alge­bra and com­pu­ter-aided geo­me­try pro­ces­sing
  • expe­ri­ence in soft­ware deve­lop­ment with C++ and the ver­sion con­trol sys­tem git
  • strong inte­rest in inter­di­sci­pli­nary rese­arch as well as good com­mu­ni­ca­tion skills
  • good com­mand of writ­ten and spo­ken Eng­lish
